University City | Neighborhood Spotlight

What's up guys! Today, we're in University City, one of my favorite neighborhoods in all of San Diego. It's in the Northwest section of the city, with the 5 fwy and La Jolla to our West, the 805 fwy and Miramar to our East and the 52 and Clairemont to our South, which creates that sort of "Golden Triangle", which is often a nickname for the area. There's a ton of reasons to love this neighborhood, but the first one is proximity to everything. So you're three and a half miles from the beach in La Jolla, you're 15 minutes from the airport, and you're like two minutes from one of the largest malls here in San Diego. And number two is the architecture, there are mid-centuries everywhere. I love William Krisel designed properties and we're full of them here. And three is the price point we're right next to La Jolla but not paying La Jolla pricing. You're elevated so you're still getting that breeze coming in off the ocean. It's such an awesome community.

So the 2,500 acres that make up University City were purchased in 1959 and subdivided in 1960 by the University Corporation. And one of the partners of the corporation, his name was Irvin Kahn. He hired William Krisel to design this University City tract. So we are on award row, we've got the model home just behind the camera here that's designed by William Krisel in the early sixties. It was the model home for the whole neighborhood, it was featured in all of the marketing materials. You'll see the butterfly roof, you'll see the cement shadow blocking. And you also see the residential clerestory windows. So sick.

So this neighborhood is actually very near and dear to my heart. My Grandparents bought the first home on Pire Ave here in the neighborhood which is often called the West End of University City. My Grandpa was a banker and Irvin Khan who developed the neighborhood was one of his clients. So he bought the house in 1964. My mom grew up here. My uncle grew up here. I think they bought it for like $6,500 or something, which is just insane. Some of my earliest childhood memories are here as well. So I'll show a couple pictures throughout this video, but it's, it's really cool. I love coming back here. It's kind of like a nostalgic feeling.

University City is such an amazing neighborhood, especially for young families looking for a sense of community. When we're walking these streets, there's kids riding their bikes, there's families out and about. It's amazing. Mild temperatures, proximity to the beach, shopping, etc. Why wouldn't you want to live here?

Another cool aspect about University City is the outdoor hiking at the Rose Canyon hiking trail. It's 8.8 miles, if you do the full loop. You can start either at Regents, Genesee, or even Boothe. There's over a hundred bird species here! Thank you guys so much for joining me on another neighborhood spotlight. Absolutely love University City, I hope you did as well. Have any questions?
