Pacific Beach | Neighborhood Spotlight

What's up guys, and welcome to Pacific Beach! One of the greatest neighborhoods in all of Southern California, we call it PB here in San Diego, it's known for its nightlife, it's beach side burritos, it's mid-century architecture and definitely the surfing and skate culture. So we're currently standing on the boardwalk here, which is called Ocean Front Walk or Ocean Boulevard. It's 3.2 miles, stretching down to Mission Bay and up to La Jolla. Tons of bike riders, runners, skateboarders, dog walkers, etc. It's very much an outdoorsy neighborhood. The main North/South drag in Pacific beach is Mission Boulevard. As you go East and further away from the beach, each of those streets are named after federal court officials from the 1900's and they're all alphabetical. So, Mission Blvd used to be Alison St. and then it's Bayard, Cass, Dawes, and keeps going up. Another interesting fact about the streets here are the East/West streets are actually named after precious stones. So you'll see Opal, Turquoise, Sapphire, etc.

So in the early 1900's ocean front lots were selling for 350 to $700. Following World War II when San Diego developed a large population boom, homes were selling on average for around $12,000. Following that huge population boom that San Diego had following world war II developers started building all over. So today I'm going to show you one of my favorite tracts within Pacific Beach in the Northern most little section called Pacifica. So we're up at the Pacifica tract, the Northern most part of Pacific beach, just East of Soledad Mountain Rd on streets like Loring St, San Aquario Dr, and Pacific Dr you're going to find unbelievable amounts of gorgeous mid-century masterpieces built by, who else? William Krisel and Dan Palmer, incredible architectural duo. Most of these homes are only actually up to 1600 square feet, even though they feel a lot larger, like a 2,500 square foot home. Palmer and Krisel really believed that if you built the home functionally, you didn't need to make it huge. Thank you guys so much for joining me on another neighborhood spotlight.
